Although Low Impact Development is ingrained in many regulations to solve stormwater problems, it can lead to unintended consequences; deep setbacks, one-size-fits-all stormwater requirements, and expensive gold plated standards. Light Imprint is a system for integrating green stormwater management infrastructure into compact, walkable places at an affordable cost. It is a system that considers context along the urban to rural transect. Debating the differences, and understanding the similarities, between Low Impact and Light Imprint can advance the overarching goal of creating an effective toolbox that benefits planning and development industry and the communities they serve. After the free kickoff presentation by John Norquist, President of the Congress for the New Urbanism, this is a chance to work alongside project leaders as they learn about and apply the Light Imprint water management toolkit. The five projects chosen reflect urban transects at work in a range of locations: Lowertown (St Paul) - Westgate TOD(St Paul) - Ford Site (St Paul) - Kensington Park (Richfield) - Legacy at Woods Edge(Lino Lakes) Tom Low, AIA, AICP CNU, is the director of town planning at Duany Plater-Zyberk & Company in the Charlotte office. He is an expert on traditional neighborhood development and authored the Light Imprint Handbook: .www.lightimprint.org. John Norquist, CNU, is the president and CEO of the Chicago-Based Congress for the New Urbanism and is the former mayor of Milwaukee.www.cnu.org.
