What IS the Next Generation of Parks?
You, ASLA-MN member, surely have an opinion or two on the matter.
Building on the momentum of the Next Generation of Parks Lecture Series of the past two years, the Minneapolis Institute of Arts, Minneapolis Park and Recreation Board, Minneapolis Parks Foundation, and ASLA-MN are kicking off the new year in high gear. We’re asking for your input to inspire and inform the future of the Minneapolis Park System this Thursday during the Third Thursday Urban Oasis event at the Minneapolis Institute of Arts. Please join us in Studio 112 from 6:30-8:30 this Thursday, January 18th.

Pop-up stores, galleries, and even parks have begun to appear increasingly in public spaces since the start of the recent recession. The term "pop-up" suggests their temporary nature—here one day, gone the next. Pop-up shops have become a recognized part of the fashion industry, and seasonal retailers often use them as temporary sites for holiday goods, from Halloween costumes to Christmas trees. More recently, pop-up parks have begun to spring up, especially in urban spaces where they can offer a sense of respite for those looking to escape without leaving their environs.
During Minnesota's cold winter months, the Minneapolis Institute of Arts will be host to a new pop-up park, which will transform the museum's cool, white lobby into a relaxing, tropical oasis with grass, palm trees, and other South Seas amenities.

Although Low Impact Development is ingrained in many regulations to solve stormwater problems, it can lead to unintended consequences; deep setbacks, one-size-fits-all stormwater requirements, and expensive gold plated standards.

Light Imprint is a system for integrating green stormwater management infrastructure into compact, walkable places at an affordable cost. It is a system that considers context along the urban to rural transect. Debating the differences, and understanding the similarities, between Low Impact and Light Imprint can advance the overarching goal of creating an effective toolbox that benefits planning and development industry and the communities they serve.

After the free kickoff presentation by John Norquist, President of the Congress for the New Urbanism, this is a chance to work alongside project leaders as they learn about and apply the Light Imprint water management toolkit. The five projects chosen reflect urban transects at work in a range of locations: Lowertown (St Paul) - Westgate TOD(St Paul) - Ford Site (St Paul) - Kensington Park (Richfield) - Legacy at Woods Edge(Lino Lakes)

Tom Low, AIA, AICP CNU, is the director of town planning at Duany Plater-Zyberk & Company in the Charlotte office. He is an expert on traditional neighborhood development and authored the Light Imprint Handbook: .www.lightimprint.org.

John Norquist, CNU, is the president and CEO of the Chicago-Based Congress for the New Urbanism and is the former mayor of Milwaukee.www.cnu.org.

MLA 1: Lake Sarita Master Plans

Lake Sarita is a small wetland at the south end of the University of Minnesota's St. Paul Campus. Historically neglected, Most of the original Lake Sarita was filled in and "temporary" student housing was built following the G.I. Bill in the 1950s and 60s. The project presented to the MLA 1 students was to re-design the space to incorporate improved hydrological properties as well as social and economic improvements into the awkward and oft-neglected space.

Portfolio Review

Next Thursday at Rapson Hall, professionals assembled with the help of the MASLA will be on-hand to give advice about what makes a good portfolio for our industry, and give crit/feedback for your work.

As part of our mission, MASLAs.c. is always working to get our students exposed to, and ultimately into the professional world, and this is one good way to do it.

Bring your portfolio materials (incomplete portfolios are totally welcome), and business cards; this should be a really informative event.

Beyond Green: The Willow Reserve Design Charrette

Greenlight Sustainable SPARC Charrette

The MASLA student chapter is partnering with Greenlight, Engineers without Borders (Local Initiatives), and GreenBiz to host a charrette for SPARC, a Community Development Corporation in St. Paul. SPARC hopes to plan a development with full-fledged environmental, social, architectural, and economic sustainability for their site in the north end of St. Paul. All students and professionals who have an interest in leveraging their knowledge and expertise into a a legitimate site plan, should plan on attending (looks great on resumes!). Snacks are provided Friday night, coffee and lunch will be provided Saturday. TCF Bank Stadium Stormwater Tour

This was GD1's first attempt at landscape design and model making. The space, an awkward corner between Edward Larrabee Barnes' Conservatory and Vineland Place, is currently showcasing Jackie Ferrara's Belvedere.
